Marriage License Requirements

PLEASE READ THE REQUIREMENTS BEFORE COMPLETING APPLICATION

You can apply for a marriage license in any Minnesota county, regardless of where you live. Your wedding ceremony can take place anywhere in the state, but it must happen within 6 months from the date of issuance. Processing time is one day for all applications. After completing the forms, please bring valid identification and payment to the Division of Property Records and Taxation (Public Service Counter), 2100 3rd Ave., Anoka, MN 55303. Filling Out Forms

Both applicants will need to provide the following information:

  • Full legal names
  • Address and state of residence
  • Date of birth
  • Information about any previous marriages including date of marriage dissolution, court and location
  • Full name of the parties after marriage
  • Social Security numbers

Application Procedures

  • Collect and organize your information that will be needed for the application process. Once the online application process is started, you must complete it in one session; you cannot save your work and return and complete it at a later time.
  • Upon completion of the application form, both applicants need to appear in person to sign the form, show identification, and pay the license fee. An oath will be administered at the time of completion of the application process.
  • Acceptable identification is: a driver's license/identification card (current or not expired more than one year & has a photo); an unexpired Military ID; an unexpired US or foreign Passport; a US certified copy of a birth certificate. Original identification must be presented - no photocopies.
  • Upon completion of the online application process, you will receive a confirmation number to bring in to complete the process at the Division of Property Records and Taxation (Public Service Counter).

Felony Applicants

Effective 8/1/23 Felony Applicants will not be able to change their name with a marriage license. Within 6 months of marriage a Civil name Change can be requested through a District Court in Minnesota. Please see District Court information on filing for a Name Change.

Fees

Fees must be paid for when you complete the application process in person. There are no refunds on marriage applications. The fee is:

  • $115.00, or 
  • $40.00 if you have completed 12 hours of premarital education
    • To qualify for the reduced fee, you must present at the time of application an acceptable Statement of Premarital Education Form on the educator's letterhead. It must be signed, dated and notarized.

Witnesses

The law requires that your marriage ceremony be witnessed by two people who are 16 years of age or older.

Weddings Performed by Officiant

The Anoka County Certificate of Filing form is available on this site for completion. This form, along with the certificate of ordination or license of ministry can be submitted for recording at the Division of Property Records and Taxation (Public Service Counter) or can be sent via mail along with the required fee. The required fee is $20.00.

Marriage Certificates

The person performing the marriage ceremony will complete and submit the certificate of marriage for recording to the Local Registrar of the county where the marriage license was issued. In Anoka County, the Local Registrar is in the Division of Property Records and Taxation (Public Service Counter). The Local Registrar records the marriage and mails a certified copy of the certificate to the applicants at the address entered on their application form.
